the character basics, full name:Gwenivere Rose Marshall
nicknames:Gwen, Gwennie
gender:Female
age:16
birthday:March 2nd
grade:Junior
orientation: straight
do you know what i'm seeing,[/color]
appearance,
hair color:dirty blond[/blockquote]
eye color: hazel
height: 5”4
weight:115
body type:not twiggy, not thick. She isn’t muscled, because she has a strong detestation for sports and working out, so she’s very soft figured. Gwen has never been tall; she’s been one of the shortest girls in class since kindergarten. This hasn’t ever really bothered her, except when in the presence of overly tall people.
distinguishing features: Gwen is very sweet faced. She blushes very easily, and is usually wearing an open expression. What stands out about her is an innocence that is visible just from looking at her. Her smile is very kind, and she laughs like a five year old-a light, uninhibited sound.
personal style: The easiest way to describe Gwen’s style is to say that it is a boho-influenced Blair Waldorf. She likes high-waisted, full skirts, girly pieces, and interesting color combinations. Often her clothes have uniquely placed bows, floral, and lace. In winter she doesn’t abandon her favorite pieces (skirts and dresses); she just pairs them with tights or leggings and calls it a day. The boho-influence comes in her unique ability to add loose layers and over-accessorizing. She owns lots of piece sign and flowery jewelry and headbands. Because she’s often up all night studying, so even with all of her unique and beautiful clothes (which she saves painfully for) she often looks a little more messy than most at school. Also, she only wears heels on very special occasions. Most of the time she can be seen in ballet flats or flat boots.

personality,
likes: Reading, learning, exploring, dancing, writing, helping others, working hard to accomplish something important, purple, clothes, star gazing, music, bubble baths, cooking, going to museums, being around young children, watching movies (especially romance, comedy, and kids movies)[/blockquote]
dislikes:chocolate, scary movies, feeling useless, people being mean to others, akward situations, feeling exposed, shallow people, driving, asking for help, flaky people, alcohol, crazy parties, running, sports in general, arguments, confrontation
strengths: hard worker, takes in information well, considerate, passionate, good at talking to adults, optimistic
weaknesses: push over, worry-wart, tries too hard sometimes, beats herself up over every little thing, lacks self confidence when around peers, easily frightened, extremely (extremely!) ticklish.
secrets: She never shares her fear of failure with anyone else, she keeps it bottled inside. She often wishes she could just be a “normal teen” that hung out with friends, went to parties and what-not. Sometimes she resents her parents for their lack of ambition and that they never pushed her academically as a child.
personality summary:
Little Girl In A Big World: Gwen still sees the world though innocent eyes. She has expectations that people will be kind to one another and is often shocked when this is not the case. Similarly, she gives people the benefit of the doubt and is sweet to anyone. It takes a lot to get her upset, and even then she would probably only hold it in rather then confront them about it. She thinks that one person can change the lives of many; one of her life goals is to do things that help many people. While deep down she is often scared that she will not succeed, overall she believes that she can accomplish these goals. She doesn’t understand why any of her classmates would resent her passion and hard work.
Big Heart: This girl has love in her heart for everyone. She is very close to her family, and takes her friendships seriously. When she likes someone, she will do anything for him or her, even if they don’t ask for it. She loves helping people and being there for people in unexpected ways. This can get her hurt easily, when people don’t feel as passionately about her as she does about them. Oftentimes, people take advantage of her kindness. Even though she’s never been in a relationship to date, Gwen would be a very passionate and dedicated girlfriend, without smothering the other person.
Hard Working: Gwen has a lot of goals (get into Yale, do teach for America, go to grad school, get into the Department of Education) and she is determined to achieve them. She knows exactly what she has to do to get what she wants, do to research and dedication. She feels strongly about what she wants to do, and hates when people make light of her dreams. Nothing comes easy for her—she is not one of those kids with photographic memory who understands everything. Instead, she spends hours doing homework every day, works with teachers before and after school, and has come to understand her best learning patterns. She gets very aggravated when people say she is “lucky to be so smart,” because that isn’t how it is at all. She firmly believes that she is not smarter than anyone else; she just works harder.
Wall Flower: In case you haven’t guessed, Gwen is not the most popular girl in school. Even though she has lived in the same town her whole life, a good portion of the people at school forgets that she’s even there. She never goes to parties, and is has very few friends her own age. She relates well to adults, and can often be seen chatting with teachers after class. Being around people her own age makes her nervous, and she has trouble understanding common social signals. Her uneasiness makes her an easy target for teasing, which she takes very personally. Due to years of being mocked in school, she’s done everything she can to fade into the background, although she secretly wishes she had the guts to be more popular.

history summary:
Ed and Maryanne were high school sweethearts. It all started in junior year, when he finally got up the courage to ask her to homecoming. She said no (she had already been asked by someone else) but from that point on, the had developed a relationship that they thought would last forever. So when they became pregnant with Gwen not long after high school, they weren’t too concerned. Neither grandparents were happy that their first grandchild (and only a few years later, their second) was going to be born out of wedlock, but they didn’t care. They would get married when they had the money to have a big, romantic wedding.
But that wedding never happened—life caught up with them, they certainly never saved the money, and it was put on the back burner.
They argued constantly. Every decision was a battle—one that often ended in things being thrown, and occasionally the police coming from a neighbor’s noise complaint. They never got the children involved, but the kids saw and heard a lot of what was going on. Family and friends worried about their home lives; certainly no one was happy. They worried that the children were suffering from all the fighting, and encouraged Ed and Maryanne to work together more.
By the time Gwen was ten, her parents realized that the relationship was over. They separated; Ed moving into an apartment in town, so the kids didn’t feel pulled apart. Gwen was never really upset about this; the constant fighting had scared and upset her enough that she was just thankful it was over. It’s pretty easy to see from this why she is so eager to avoid confrontation. She didn’t even mind that she became the unofficial go-between so her parents could avoid awkward or angry conversations.
So her home life stayed chaotic, but in a very different way. She and Gabriel go back and forth between Ed and Maryanne's on a weekly basis, but the two live close enough to each other that it isn't really a big deal. The fighting, and the throwing stopped, which was a big improvement from their lives before. Money was tighter than ever, because now her dad had to pay for his apartment every month. They didn't go without, but they did have to spend very carefully--there was defiantly no room for impulse buying. As soon as Gwen was old enough, she got her own job and began to pay for all of her own clothes and anything else she could to alleviate the guilt she felt about being a bearing on her parents. When she wasn't working or in school, she babysat her younger brother so that her parents could have a few nights off.
In school was where Gwen was most happy—she loved learning new things and developed a love for reading at a very early age. Her parents never really pushed her to do well in school—she did it on her own. They were happy for her, but never showed a large interest in her schoolwork. Instead, Gwen turned to her teachers for encouragement, which they amply provided. It was these early years that Gwen reflected upon when she decided that she wanted to work in the department of education.
As she got older, Gwen began to struggle more and more with finding ways to relate to her classmates. She often felt uncomfortable and nervous around them, but instead of learning to be more social, she retreated into her own world of books, especially fantasy and historical fiction. Unfortunately, reading all the time makes one a bit unapproachable, and so she became even less likely to gain friendships. For years she has accepted this as a fact of life, but now that she’s older, Gwen wishes she were more well rounded and sociable.

He stood at the edge of the vast, unforgiving cliff, watching the waves crash violently against the side of the cliff wall, so far down. It was the most beautiful, breathtaking, terrifying sight he’d ever seen. Knowing that made him content that the view would be the last he set his eyes upon. He gently nudged a decent sized rock off the edge of the cliff with his toe. Hands in his pockets, he watched expressionlessly as it tumbled down, turning over itself until it crashed unceremoniously into the foaming waters below. With a sigh, the boy closed his eyes—gray and stormy as the raging ocean—and inhaled. The smell of the sea, so salty and crisp, filled him to the core. He could smell a storm coming, which explained why the tumultuous waters looked more ferocious than usual. He opened his eyes and suddenly felt so… small. The vast ocean lay before him, with more power in its depths than he could possibly imagine. One tiny step and he would be as meaningless as the rock he had fated to fall—careening towards the end of his existence. He felt the need to question himself.
With a sigh more suggestive of a ninety year old than a nineteen year old, the boy sat at the edge of the cliff, feet dangling over the crashing waves. He wasn’t worried about falling. He tried—as he had tried many times before—to conceive reasons that he shouldn’t end his life. Both of his parents were gone: his mother dead from a short and painful illness, his father a soulless shell lying in Azkaban. The last thing his father had done before being taken away to the dementor was to turn to the blond boy watching in agony and announce, “I have no son.”
He had no friends—certainly no one to turn to. All of his childhood cohorts were either dead or in Azkaban. Those who were alive turned their back to him as soon as they had heard why he had gone missing. That he had traded sides. So certainly, he must have friends, or companions in the very least, on the Light side. They must have welcomed him with open arms and rejoiced his choice to leave Voldemort. Alas, such was not the case. When he had left everything he knew, he had been scared of course—fearful that his decision would cost him his life. But more than that, he’d become bitter and angry; eager for revenge against the people who had forced him into a war that had began before he was born, who’d placed ridiculous expectations on him and made him feel worthless most of his life. He had envisioned himself spying for the order, to pay off the debt on his soul for the evil he had partaken in when he had been a Death Eater. Yet, when he had turned himself in, he found that a very different situation awaited him. Not only did the Order doubt his ability to spy, they were mistrustful of his motives. From the moment he decided to join the Light, to the end of the war eight tedious months later, the boy found himself confined to Grimmauld Place, with nothing to do but fester his own feeling of uselessness and self-loathing as he thought back in all the harm he had caused. Finally he was free, but he felt like he had never been atoned for his wrongs—and with the war over, he never would. It seemed as though the rest of the wizarding world agreed with him. They still looked down upon him with distaste—they saw a coward. A fraud. A sinner. And so did he.
So really, it was an easy choice to make. Once he was dead, so would be his loneliness and self-loathing. The Malfoy name would be no more—all of the money they had would be donated to post-war reconstruction groups; his only positive contribution to society.
The slow setting of the sun pulled the boy from his miserable thoughts. The amber disk seemed to be setting his world on fire—one last marvel before the night took over. The sky was a torrid eruption of purples, oranges, and reds, and the ocean sparkled blindingly in the recession of the steadily sinking sun. He wondered briefly how a world filled with so much beautiful could allow so much evil to roam free for so long. How it was possible that he—and people like himself—were not banned from the otherwise dazzling and flawless world that lay before him.
Something in the corner of his eye pulled the boy away from his distressing thoughts, and the marvelous sight before him.
