Anything less then perfection is a failure, and Ava gets quite caught up in this mentality. - Ava is quite a hostile person, she’s not necessarily rude, but she does tend to get caught up in the ‘first impression’ phase quite a bit; if Ava doesn’t like someone immediately, she tends to come across as really nasty and bitchy, where as she’s really quite reserved and shy. -Ava is an emotional hoarder; she doesn’t forget anything and doesn’t get over things easily at all. Someone could’ve mentioned something in passing two years previously, and Ava could still be stewing on it even now. Ava is much the same with relationships, even a minor fling can be a massive turning point for her, she won’t get over someone very quickly at all. SECRETS: Ava began smoking marijuana at the age of fourteen, but lied to everyone (including her psychiatrist) telling them she didn’t start until she was seventeen as she is terrified it has been a huge benefactor to her recent mental instability; Ava spent the last eight months of her travels working as a part time secretary at a public high school in the UK, she was fired for having ‘relations’ with some of the students (despite the fact that she was only eighteen years old herself) she told her father that she quit due to pay cuts; Ava would like to believe that she went to rehab on her own accord, the fact that Nolan had finally called the relationship to an end sent her into a severe downward spiral resulting in suicide or rehab... luckily she was forced into option B after overdosing on methamphetamines at a local night club after being caught underage.
PERSONALITY SUMMARY: Ava’s personality differs day to day, and from person to person. Ava has the innate knack of acting a certain way to get what she wants. Overall, Ava is incredibly manipulative, even if she doesn’t quite realise this fact. Ava can be as sweet as pie, and say and do all of the right things if the situation calls for her to act this way; for example, during her first stint in rehabilitation for an eating disorder as well as substance abuse when Ava was seventeen years old, she would act as though she was completely recovering, eating well and maintaining a healthy train of thought in order to be released into her father’s care, but as soon as she returned home she would begin to exercise obsessively in secret – often spending all night in her room practicing squats and crunches, while her poor father and boyfriend thought she was resting. This manipulative streak, whilst getting Ava exactly what she wanted in life, had a serious negative impact on almost everyone around her. However, not everything about Ava is a complete hoax; When Ava cares about a person, she cares about them with her whole heart. She is an extremely empathetic person and will often stop to think about how her actions (besides her eating habits of course) will affect other people. Ava has a great love of animals (even if she hates their fur) and often finds herself quite upset with animal abuse ads on television, as well as child neglect and homelessness. Ava has a big heart, but often takes her empathy to unhealthy levels. Ava is the sort of girl that if she found a lost wallet with $200 cash inside, she would hand the wallet into a service desk – even if she only has $2 in her own bank account, because, after all, it’s what she would want someone to do for her... Although she would often have extreme remorse after an act of kindness, such as this, and dwell on her feelings of loss for quite some time. Little things can set Ava into a ‘down’ mood, and her sweet and caring personality can change into a reckless and dangerous persona, or a very hostile and subdued persona in a matter of minutes. Sometimes Ava can be so furious with herself or someone else, she can put herself and others at great harm – particularly if she takes her frustration out on herself with substance abuse. Ava had a terrible habit of going out nightclubbing, getting herself shamelessly drunk and high and bringing a strange man home with her whenever she had a fight with her father during high school. Other times, Ava can put herself at risk with her extreme fasting or dieting; after an argument with a friend or Nolan she would set off on a gruelling trek around Ridgewood, over and over again until she physically couldn’t run any further, or her father physically forced her to stop.
NATIONALITY: Irish American HOMETOWN: Ridgewood NJ PARENTS: Aiden Daniel Burton, forty-nine, paramedic Doreen Isla Flinn, deceased
SIBLINGS: N/A OTHER IMPORTANT PEOPLE: N/A HISTORY SUMMARY: Aiden and Doreen Burton met when they were both twenty-two years old, Aiden was working as a truck driver, delivering truck loads of harvested grain to the Silo’s, where Doreen was working as a receptionist. Aiden was attracted to the petite blonde instantly, but was much too timid to approach her, unsure if he could take the rejection... in an act of courage, he bribed his twelve year old nephew Martin to approach Doreen and find out what her favourite colour and flower was. Aiden was terribly dismayed when Martin returned with the answer of the colour blue, and the flower rose – as well as demanding his $5 bribe. Martin had planned to approach Doreen with her favourite flower in her favourite colour in a bid to win her affections and ask her out on a first date, so after painstakingly hand painting the petals of a rose blue, he nervously approached her. Doreen laughed at first, making the connection immediately between the young boy asking her favourite colour and flower and the shy, but handsome, young man standing before her asking her on a date to the local movies. Doreen was a woman with a kind heart, and after realising the great effort he had gone to in order to impress her, she agreed to go on a date with the young man. The couple continued to date for three years before they moved in together, and then a further three, until Doreen demanded he either marry her or let her move on as she had planned to have had a family by twenty-eight. Balking a little bit at this demand, Aiden asked to have three more months to think it over. An upset Doreen left the couples apartment, completely heartbroken the man that she had planned to marry wasn’t as in love with her as she was with him, and moved back in with her parents. After sobbing for almost two weeks straight, she was surprised to find Aiden at her parents front door one night, baring a blue rose in one hand and a box in the other – he had asked for the extra three months as he had been paying off an engagement ring in secret and had three payments remaining, and was forced to reconsider his career as a truck driver due to the poor wages, so had enrolled to train to become a paramedic. The couple wed the following year, both twenty nine. A few short months after the wedding, the couple announced joyfully they were expecting their first born child. On September 1st 1990, Doreen gave birth to a happy and healthy baby daughter, whom they christened Ava Grace Burton. Now, not all was smooth sailing during Ava’s first few years, in fact, within a couple of days of her second birthday, Doreen noticed a strange, but not particularly painful lump under her right arm – assuming this lump was a cyst or an ingrown hair, she thought nothing of it. Around the time Ava turned three, her mother was violently ill, in fact she was terminally ill with breast cancer and bound to hospital bed rest. Some of Ava’s earliest childhood memories are of her very small, and very sick and fragile mother laying almost motionless in a big white bed. To this day, the smell of hospital disinfectant makes Ava sick to her stomach. Growing up without a mother never seemed strange to Ava, sure when she started school all the other children’s mother waved tearful goodbyes at the front gate, but Ava waved a proud goodbye from the ambulance station down the block from the school and marched into her first day of kindergarten herself. Ava’s fierce independence was evident from a very young age, all throughout grade school she tended to keep to herself, she had a few close friends, but she was never one to get caught up in the crowd of trends. Ava was quite the tom boy, she never played with dolls or wore dresses, she chose to play cards with the boys and dress in jeans – so she could climb tree’s with ease. It wasn’t until high school there was a vast difference in Ava, her fierce independent and stubborn streak urged her to be ‘the best’.
During her freshmen year, Ava was on the schools long distance track running team; she took great pleasure in running for long distances. However, her obsession quickly began to turn sour; she would over exert herself at training, but refuse to eat to keep up her energy levels. As her body weight began to plummet, so did Ava’s self esteem. She began to watch everything she ate so crucially, she often restricted herself of everything bar water and a granola bar a day – this was easy to hide from her father due to the fact he often spent nights working at the ambulance station. At the age of sixteen, Ava met Nolan, and she was utterly smitten. The two lost souls took great solace in each other’s company – for Ava however, it was a particularly unhealthy relationship. She took full advantage of Nolan’s unconditional love, often tormenting him unknowingly with her eating habits and substance abuse. As much as she loved Nolan, she loved the fact that if she hurt him, he would forgive her. And if he hurt her, she could make him suffer by hurting herself.
One day, Nolan broke down, explaining he couldn’t handle anymore of her self-destructive behaviour, and finally ended the relationship once and for all. This act infuriated Ava, and to get ‘revenge’ she put on her shortest, skimpiest dress, grabbed her fake ID and went into the city in a bid to punish Nolan. Anyone with common sense could point out consuming alcohol and an empty stomach was a bad idea, but consuming alcohol on a stomach that had been empty for years was an even worse move. Ava dosed herself up with a nasty cocktail of ecstasy tablets and distilled vodka, ending up passing out in a gutter and being rushed to a hospital to have her stomach pumped. This move, which was intended on hurting Nolan, ended up breaking her father’s last straw. As Ava was under the age of eighteen, she was signed in by her father into a rehabilitation centre in the country’s far north. Rehab wasn’t the best place for a person like Ava, she already manipulative and cruel girl just found new ways of deceiving people, and as soon as she turned eighteen she was able to sign herself out. Her father, unable to handle the idea of Ava returning to Ridgewood, bought an airfare to London as an eighteenth birthday present. Ava went straight from Rehab to London where she soon picked up a job as a secretary at a public high school. For almost a year Ava was back on the right track, but as Christmas loomed and her contract with the school began to come to an end, she soon went back to her partying ways, often going out with various students at the school into the London night life. She was fired three weeks before her due date to fly home, so after much deliberation, she decided to extend her visa and travel across Europe until the following summer. As the end of April rolled around, and the summer months loomed, Ava quietly returned to Ridgewood, enrolling in a degree of commerce, intent on restarting her life.
